Biomethane could become one of the options to get rid of dependence on Russian gas. However, experts say it can only partially contribute to replacing natural gas. Europe is already the world leader in biomethane production, with Germany, Italy and France among the main drivers. Now the European Commission wants to substantially increase its production, even doubling it. By 2030, the Commission plans to increase annual biomethane production to 35 billion cubic metres, replacing around a fifth of natural gas from the East.
