The development of biomethane in the Czech Republic was the main topic of an expert debate organised by Hospodářské noviny entitled “The Biomethane Boom Is Just Around the Corner.” The discussion featured the perspective of our company, presented by our Managing Director, Radek Kundrata. The debate focused on the role of biomethane in the transformation of the Czech energy sector, particularly in connection with the phase‑out of coal and the growing share of renewable energy sources.

Biomethane is a gas produced by upgrading biogas generated from the processing of organic waste. Its major advantage lies in the possibility of injecting it into the existing gas infrastructure, where it can serve as a low‑emission alternative to natural gas while also acting as a stable energy source that complements the intermittent generation from photovoltaic and wind power plants. The ability to store energy over the long term and ensure continuous operation was repeatedly highlighted during the debate as one of biomethane’s key benefits.

The Czech Republic has very favourable conditions for the development of this segment thanks to its dense network of biogas plants. Despite this, biomethane is currently produced at only a limited number of facilities, primarily due to insufficient support mechanisms to date. A change is expected with the introduction of the Biomethane Development Action Plan, which envisages an auction‑based support scheme and a long‑term guaranteed operating price. These measures should help create a more stable and predictable environment for investors and financing institutions.

During the discussion, Radek Kundrata also highlighted the importance of biomethane as a stable and decentralised energy source, as well as the need for the supply chain to be prepared for the anticipated increase in demand for biomethane technologies—not only in the Czech Republic, but across other European countries as well.

In addition to our company, the debate was attended by representatives of Energy Financial, innogy Czech Republic and the Energy Regulatory Office. There was broad agreement that the planned auctions could significantly contribute to the development of biomethane and pave the way for the construction of dozens of new biomethane plants in the coming years.
